These two little mugs look like models on the runway, posing in the light with their hands on their hips. You know, it's weird - when I finish a still life, it tells me what the title should be. On this one, I tried to change the title to something more academic, but the painting just wouldn't let me! I got these hand blown mugs at an antique store, and the red just grabbed me and I had to buy them.

Well, as I got involved in this one, it seemed like one reflection after another just kept popping up! That's what I get for putting glass and metal in the same painting. It was fun, though!

Sunflowers2 - SOLD

This one was really enjoyable to do - and I'm not one to do too may florals. I have more fun with the transparent glass, and I like the little pink bits that come through. But there's something about sunflowers that attract me - (there's that yellow again), and maybe it's the fact that they were VanGogh's fave.

There's something about intense yellow that I am always attracted to, probably because it's daring to break the rules and use paint right out of the tube. I like the composition in this one - the fact that the sunflower is a small part of the canvas and is still the most important element is cool.

"I'm Quite Comfortable, Thank You"- SOLD

This little pear has found the most comfortable seat in the room - it fits him perfectly and is quite stylish. This blue votive holder finds its way into my paintings quite often. I was inspired to paint the blue and yellow with the dark value background, because I heard that the Dutch artist Vermeer especially loved blue and yellow together. These two colors really do get along well!

Only Room For One

The cherry tomato in the bowl feels safe and secure, while his friend on the table wants in. This small bowl is really a votive holder, but I love to use it for other things as I paint it. I like the thick glass and all the blues it creates, depending on the light.

Happy Birthday to Me!

On my birthday, I knew I would get a little time to do anything I wanted - so of course I chose to paint. Someone gave me a bouquet with this flower in it. So it only seemed right to put it in my painting. For me, the jar was way more fun to paint than the flower!

Geranium

The dark green glass bowl was borrowed from a friend. I chose the pink geranium for its complementary relationship with the bowl. I like the subtle contrast between the warm and cool greens.

Holly and Oranges - SOLD

I did this painting while vacationing in Big Bear with a couple of friends. I was wanting to put something green into the jar, and holly was about the only thing available. I like the combo of colors here, and the way the blue peeks through the background.

Vintage Egg - SOLD

I found this little blue bowl at an antique store. I love the delicate shape and the subtle color on the edges. It's probably Depression glass, so very old. Again, so much fun painting the egg!

Green Egg

I got this little green mixing bowl from Ebay for $.99 - what a steal. This is one of my favorite colors, and I like the way the bowl reflects onto the table. The title playfully suggests that famous children's book - everyone asks "and Ham?"- and I say "No - just Green Egg".

Eggie in a Dish

When I was little, my mom would make me "eggie" in a dish - which was a soft-boiled egg in a small dish, often with toast. This painting reminded me of that - even though it's a raw egg. It is a sunny, happy painting. The transparent bowl with the transparent egg were really fun to paint.

Simple Beauty - SOLD

I noticed that the peach blossoms were blooming at a vacant property next door, so my son went over and picked some for me to paint. I love the shape of this little jar, and so I use it in paintings quite often. Sometimes the simplest objects are the most interesting.

This painting has been donated to an annual art auction in Claremont, California - the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, to be held on May 30, 2010, from 2-4:30pm, at Galileo Hall, Harvey Mudd College.

In the Lemonlight

This lemon wedge tries to be seen in the reflected light of the water in the jar. Transparent objects are particularly enjoyable for me. I like to simplify everything I see, as complicated as it may be, into the abstract shapes, colors, and values that make the object believable.

Many Greens, One Vase

I found this little green vase at a thrift store, and knew right away I would paint it. Green is a favorite color, and I knew that to get the green of the vase, many warm and cool greens would be involved. The pink flower provided an interesting complement, and though it begs for attention, it will never overpower the vase.

I'm on Fire

The hot colors of the red hurricane and the orange slices seem to be on fire. The reflections and shadows can't deny the warmth. All colors are friends here.

Overshadowed

These tangerine slices seem to be hiding in the shadows of their far more interesting counterparts - the blue votives. However, the complementary color of the tangerines does give them some importance.
